This Week’s paintings

Alright, what was I painting the last week? I started out trying a pad of Arches Oil Paper that I bought a couple of years ago.

I remember that when I tried it a few years ago, I didn’t love it. It felt too absorbent, too much drag on the brush. I think though, that maybe I just wasn’t using enough paint. I have heard many of my favourite painters and instructors say that we shouldn’t be afraid to use the paint! And I think I’m finally beginning to see what they mean.

This is the beginning of a little 5x7 oil on arches paper.

Apparently this paper is 100% cotton, and treated in a fashion that allows you to paint directly on it, while still being completely archival. I enjoyed experimenting on it and especially removing the taped edges when I was done.

Here’s the little finished experiment. Excuse the slightly blurry photo. I’m interested in trying to paint some more night time scenes, the lighting is a whole different world.
